Five things that should never be adapted into movies
Posted on 18. May, 2010 by Bran Rainey.
If Hollywood has taught us anything, it’s that some things should never be made into movies. Everyone knows this, but sometimes the lure of money is just too much for all those poor, starving millionaires to resist…

Your Life is a Plotline
Posted on 23. Nov, 2009 by Bran Rainey.
I’ve been thinking a lot recently about the paths we take through life. I like to think of it in terms of movies: what would make for an interesting plotline? You’d be surprised how much life can mimic the story arc of a good movie…

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

The new Potter film is as good to the story as it is to the eyes, adapting the core story elements of its novel into a form more suitable for a visual medium. The film feels like a perfect continuation from Order of the Phoenix, which is to be expected given the director, but also manages to come across as the logical maturation of Prisoner of Azkaban.

Harry Potters 1 to 5

CuarĂ³n does a great job with immersion, but he leaves out far too many integral plot details. Harry Potter fans like to whine about every tiny little cut that the film adaptations make, which has always gotten on my nerves: this is one huge exception. There’s too much story cut out of this movie, and I really can’t think of a reason why. The book of this one was a bit longer than Chamber, but the movie is a bit shorter. Bran’s Zombieland review

Zombie movies tend be rather empty, I admit, so it’s always nice to see one break away from that and offer some subtext a la the original George Romero films. This is not such a movie.

Connor Beaton’s Zombieland review
Posted on 21. Oct, 2009 by Connor Beaton.
Shaun of the Dead has already proven to us that there is comedy in the zombie apocalypse, and Zombieland is perhaps an even better example of such. Opting for the fast “Infected” zombies, the film sees Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin take on the roles of four survivors of the human apocalypse.

The Hangover

Usually I need a dose of drama in a film to make me care about the comedy, but every once in a while I see a comedy film that really steps above the rest and manages to deliver some witty lines and situations without injecting any big dramatic elements. The Hangover is definitely a step above most pure comedies.
